Testing Memory Subsystem with Memtester
memtester is a user-space utility for testing the memory subsystem in a computer to determine if it is faulty. It does a reasonably good job of finding intermittent faults and non-deterministic faults. It has many tests to help catch borderline memory, and generates a verbose report of faults found, tests run, and time taken.
You can crank up memory testing 12MB at a time: memtest mem 12M

Has anybody looked at the Multics source, now available, that should
have the “Disk DIM” software in it somewhere. Back before the dawn of Linux
the Disk DIM stuff was an amazing performance booster for Multics. The Father
of all that is *nix. I am sure Tom would be interested.
