Does This Distro Make Me Look Fat?

If the wine you drink, car you drive, food you eat, clothes you wear and even pets you have defines you as a person; does your choice of Linux Distro defines you too?

If you use Ubuntu… You like to follow the crowd and do whatever everyone else does. No individualism.

If you use Debian… You are a giver. You let the crowd followers be more popular with your ideas.

If you use Gentoo… You are a perfectionist. While everyone is partying, you are still getting dressed.

If you use Arch… You do it for the Lulz. 4Chan!

If you use PCLinuxOS… You dumped your girlfriend (Windows), and found someone who looks like her, but better.

If you use Red Hat… You are respected by all. Used by none.

If you use Suse… You supposedly crossed over to the dark side.

If you use Mandriva… You like frequent changes. Anymore changes and no one will remember you.

If you use Slackware… You probably like “Antiques Roadshow” too.

Tell us, which linux distro do you use and why you prefer it over others?

Mint. Because it isn’t brown. I also am lazy and setting up a debian machine takes to long.

whats the deal with all this egotistic my distro is better then yours bashing.. its stupid, retarded, and divides us from the truth that linux is KERNEL and the backbone of the OS.. who cares who likes using debian cause its tried and true, ubuntu cause its debian on steroids, gentoo if you get off watching flies have sex or paint dry, pclinuxos cause it JUST works and why would you want your linux to NOT WORK isnt this the complaint about “windows”?
as long as blogs like this exist and there are 500 distros of linux, linux will NEVER conquer anything, nor will it EVER be the year of the linux desktop(this is said like 4x a year it seems). Choice is linuxs best and WORST feature.. until people can use their choice of linux in PEACE and enjoy it for its good points, and people stop belittling others for their choices, linux will never be more then a hobbyists OS or a choice of someone that has windows dual booting or a windows box.. cause some people do NOT care about the underpinnings, they just want it to work..
by the way I’ve used slack (nice, fast, but too much configuring), ive used gentoo, (too much compiling, for even the smallest d/l’d programs) ive used debian, i like current packages, ive used suse.. and mandriva, both dont just work, i’m currently using ubuntu cause its NOT as easy as pclinuxos(it doesnt just work) but its easily set up, and pclinuxos wont install on this triple core system.. so 64 bit ubuntu is the way i’m going.. Ive used sabayon.. but updating always breaks the system.. kitchen sink distros are nice, but the drains are often clogged..
there’s my 2 cents.. now i’m broke, now lets all get to using linux regardless of distro, mentality, ego, package manager, and get to USING your computer.

I have used all of these at one point or another and I am generally just happy with Linux. But I am primarily a CentOS (RedHat) user. OpenSUSE 11 is running pretty good though too… :)

Fedora. That was a coincidence, really. I’ve put Ubuntu on my neighbour’s notebook; I’m not religious about distributions.

    Ahah nice one,
I use ubuntu, and what I’d say for ubuntu is :

“you are the kind of guy that makes the easy choices and that doesn’t want to think too hard.”

    Funny post.

openSUSE. It was the first distro I installed in 2001. During the last seven years I have used all mainstream distros on my desktop, but I come always back to openSUSE as my main desktop.

I like YaST. It lets me easily configure everything I need to (no need for editing text files), including the firewall (ever heard that, Ubuntu users?!). It is not as fast as Slackware and the repositories include only the important applications, but it is fast enough for my Pentium and has all the apps I need.

And I allways receive the boxed set delivered by DHL ;-)

    Greetings, Mikko / Lightweight Linux

I use Ubuntu, because I can leave my web music subscription on, I can leave my peer to peer communication device on and I can review changes made to my web site to make sure all platforms are catered too.

I use Ubuntu as my preferred web based application OS.

I never follow, never is a long time.

I’ll use any OS to get projects finished and Ubuntu when I do not want to be hacked by some destructive moron with a keyboard in one hand and its hotdog or clam sandwich in the other.

I like to have the choice. That choice is simply to get the work done with no hassles at all.

Like “Bob the IT Guy” I have used all of these, with the exception being Slackware. They were all funny, except for Arch, which I didn’t really get. Maybe I’m biased since I am an Arch user.

I got a kick out of Brad, goes off on a tirade about not distro bashing, but devotes a whole paragraph to pointing out all the distro flaws except for Ubuntu, coincidently the camp he’s in since he can’t get PCLinuxOS to install. Classic.

Oh yeah… Can I has Lynix, k thx bie, lulz! (I guess that’s what I’m supposed to do as an Arch user?)

I like Ubuntu because of support. But when it comes to running my server Ubuntu just doesnt cut it, so I use CentOs by the RedHat guys. The suppot isnt there but with some googleing I can find any answer and they almost match with almost any other linux distro. oh also I dont have to do sudo for every root command :P

    Ubuntu, because it’s orange.

Also there’s a very big change that I’ll see a .deb for ubuntu vs. an easy install way for another program. Critical mass support ftw.

Use what works for you. I use PCLinuxOS, and it looks like any other KDE desktop, to me, and works just like as if Debian and Mandriva had a baby (Mandy + Apt/Synaptic). I don’t get the Windows connection, unless they refer to the old look with the multi-colored pinwheel logo. That’s so 2 years ago…

I’ve used many distros, and once setup, they work basically the same. KDE is the same across all distros. I like jeans and t-shirts, you might like to dress up a lot. To each his own.

I’ve used Debian, Fedora, RHEL, Ubuntu and played with PCLOS, Open Suse and a few other distros. Its now gotten to the point where I dont really care what distro it is. They all use the same software and most of the differnces are minor.

    I use Pardus Linux.

    1. Because it is not Ubuntu.
    2. It is not based off Ubuntu.
    3. It has developed its own tools (Murdur, Comar, Pisi Package Format, Own wireless tools, Tasma).
    4. It is one of the very few distros doing somethign different. Most just use ubuntu as a base or are identical to the other, but Pardus is developing their own features and systems.

    I like:
Ubuntu - Lots of packages, stable. support. gigantic userbase, Debian based although not compatible.
Gentoo - Guided and superb customization. Fine tuned packages (compile yourself). Lots of guides, wiki articles to find your way out..

    I hate:
Slackware - Manual-ish package manager sucks (to me). Packages outdated. It really slacks. *Worse* than Gentoo.

I use gentoo - I love to start from scratch and I like to explore new things. I really like gentoo wiki, gentoo docs & gentoo support. They really explain things in deep.
I also use Ubuntu in case if gentoo screwed up ;)

My favorite distro is Gentoo, followed closely by Slackware. I like distros where you have to do some work to get things working, but when you finally get them going, they work wonderfully and are perfect for both you and your system. Another big reason I like Gentoo is what Abhinay said, the documentation for Gentoo far exceeds (imo) the documentation of any other distro out there.

“using ubuntu means no individualism?!?! that leaves no space for windows and osx. i realize this article is specific to linux and normalized for the community, but i use ubuntu because i would probably be an apple guy, but find it played out and restrictive. its like starbucks for me.”

I’ve been in analysis fro awhile now, but I still have this multiple personality thing going on in my head. So when Jack is in charge, I’m using PCLinux OS. When Struther is dominant, I’m using CentOS. And Randy turns up, I’m into Sidux. Most of the time I’m Randy.

    Time for my meds.

I use Sabayon, because it’s much easier to install and get working than gentoo, but since it is based on gentoo, it is still very customizable. I’m really happy with it’s binary package manager integration, as well.
