Make Linux: Harder - Better - Faster

How many of you have never customized/tweaked your favorite linux distro since your first installation? I suspect very few, if any. One of the main appeal of Linux (and open source softwares) is the freedom of customization and the choice to do virtually anything you want. You are only limited by your imagination and understanding of the system. So today we will share some tips and information to make your linux system…

As always, spreading the good words of Linux; and remember, Our Work Is Never Over… :)

Please blacklist the Ultamatix link, asap.
It is just as broken as it’s predecessor, causes lots of headaches for the users - because their systems become broken - and the developers, because the said users complain to developers not Ultamatix makers.
See http://www.geekosophical.net/?p=186 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=870104&page=4 . Additionally, here http://mjg59.livejournal.com/77440.html is the review of the original horror - and this still uses majorly original code.
So, unless you’d like to cause headaches for users and developers, blacklist the link.
Vadim, thanks for the note. Instead of removing the link, I left a link to your comment. Truth is most of the “tips” linked here is potential for messing up configuration one way or another, if one doesn’t know what they are doing.
I used Automatix (now dead) with some good and some very bad memories. IMO users should get to decide what they want to do with their system, as long as they are properly warned.
Thanks again.
That’s a good solution, thanks!
Stronger? You killed it ;_; Great post!
Great Link List… added to fav, especially with security list.
Thanks, but how about some advice that doesnt only apply to ubuntu?
for example centos 5?
im interested how to optimize linux server
Pretty sure that I’m already doing that in my current OS, plus playing games natively without a hassle. Needing an “understanding of the system” isn’t much of an incentive, either. What else ya got?
I have to agree with Vadims post.
Here is MJG’s butchery of Ultamatix (i.e. his post about this sorry follow up to crappy software): http://mjg59.livejournal.com/99905.html
Sorry, if this link was posted before.
Always good to see articles about customising linux, thanks.
