10 Reasons You Should Not Switch To Linux

Every week I read a new blog post giving 1025 or even 100 reasons you should switch to Linux right now. I say bah humbug to them. If you need someone to give you 100 reasons to switch your current OS of choice, you are better of sticking with it. As someone who is literally forced to use windows for work-related task, use a Mac just because I have money to blow and runs an obscure Linux distro to prove my point about my anti conformist views; I know a thing or two about why you shouldn’t switch to Linux.

1) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… you actually enjoy paying for an operating system that is so mired with bugs and issues that it shouldn’t be even released as an alpha build. What recession?

2) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… change is always scary. Look at Obama, he scares the shit out of me. I voted for him but he always talks about change and change is always scary even if that change will make things better.

3) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… the only thing you use your computer is to play games. I mean people still use computer for anything other than games?

4) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… You love to dedicate one whole day of your week just for scanning purposes. Anti-virus scan – Spyware Scan – Defragmentation scan – Registry Scan & defrag. What Fun!

5) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… You love to pay for Anti-virus/spywares (with yearly subscription renewal) for protection that the OS should provide you in the first place. Even though Windows Defender does a fabulous job, its just not there yet.

6) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… most people use Windows. If most people use windows it must be good!

7) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… you realize that nothing lasts forever. Eventually your windows will succumb to a BSOD, while Linux has its version of kernel panic, you might have to wait couple of years to experience it, if at all.

8) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… you LOVE Internet Explorer and you can only use the latest version of Internet explorer on windows. Imagine going online without IE?

9) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… you have to be a geek to use Linux and we all know that geeks don’t have girlfriend.

10) Last but not least. You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… you don’t want to be a conformist and do what everyone tells you to do. You want to be unique, which is why you want to use windows. Oh wait…

Posts such as this are essentially obnoxious trolling, and do not help Linux’s cause. Focus on Linux’s strengths as reasons for conversion; not Windows’ weaknesses. Linux has that many strengths that it should not be difficult for you to do this.

I’ve been meaning to reinstall Ubuntu myself for a while now, but truthfully, this post actually reminds me of the main reason why I took a hiatus from Linux for a few years in the first place.

A lot of Linux users have a real attitude problem, and that more than anything else is what holds the OS back.

    HAH!

At #8 I know people that think the Internet IS Internet explorer. Without it, they wouldn’t be able to get on the Internet. Mind you, these are the same types of people that thought AOL was the Internet.

Thanks, I loled. I also run Win, OSX and a no-need-to-name-it flavor of linux or two.
At this point now the only reason for the Win is XP games and the reason for the OSX machine? It was free.

In times of windows 98 I would have switched to Linux in no time. It was a buggy OS, showing you blue screens on a daily basis. With XP everything changed. I tried Linux some years later on a second partition and had a lot of problems, especially with drivers, which didn’t really convince me to switch (i still have it tho). So, I’m not against Linux, because the world has more colors than black and white ;p

But reading the same false arguments over and over again is getting boring. XP is a stable os, and no average PC needs more than an hour of scanning (which is not even needed with a decent antivirus guard). There are free antivirus apps out there… they are good enough, although antivirus companies would never agree (obviously). Same applies to other tools. And look at the IE stats… wow, this is just in: windows users know how to use firefox!

No, we are not lazy, we are not afraid, for many XP is a good OS, well protected and maintained by free (open source) tools.

And a counterargument from somebody who loathes OS fanboys.

    1) I run WinXP. I haven’t experienced bugs or issues with it for over five years. I’ve seen bugs with individual programs, but that’s the fault of the individual developer, not Windows (in most cases).

    2) Change isn’t scary, but Windows works. I know where my stuff is, I don’t have to worry about what distro of my operating system I need to download the installer of a program for. It’s not about change, it’s about ease of use.

    3) Gaming on Linux blows. It’s an extra hassle and doesn’t really seem worth the time.

    4) I’m internet savvy. I do a virus scan about once a year. I usually disable my antivirus from running on startup, as well. If you know what you’re doing, there’s no risk.

    5) AVG Free.

    6) If most people use it, that means there’s going to be more support for it. That’s basic supply and demand.

    7) The only BSOD I’ve ever had has been hardware related. I’ve experienced four of them, ever. One was when I forgot to power off the machine before pulling out my HDD, another was when I intentionally didn’t care and pulled out the HDD with the power on, and other two were when some RAM sticks went bad. I guess five if you want to count the BSOD screensaver I installed and used for all of one hour.

    8) I install Firefox on every fresh install of Windows I perform. I’ve had Win XP on this laptop for a little over a year, and have used Internet Explorer zero times. Zero.

    9) You don’t have to be a geek to use Linux, but you DO have to be a geek to be a Linux fanboy.

    10) What?

well, I bought a Dell mini with Ubuntu. Worked nice.
I wanted to install the latest opera and had to add a new repository; I did and apget crashed and could not be fixed.
Man that was much too easy to break (that has never happened to me with XP)!
Then I started to worry abt the drivers for the wireless modem and the hp printer I am getting. And I agree about the hassle abt downloading software for your exact linux version…
So I installed XP; I feel safe with AVira AV, a firewall and the additional protection of SuRun (UAC like) or Defensewall (policy sandbox).
    Don’t get me wrong, I like Linux; driver support is getting better (especially with all these netbooks); wine has matured if needed;
    but…

    > I know where my stuff is, I don’t have to worry about what distro of my operating system I need to download the installer of a program for.

Errrr … what? WTF? What in heavens name are you on about?

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/The-New-Ubuntu-User-Guide-Install-and-Uninstall-Software-49979.shtml

    http://news.softpedia.com/images/reviews/large/ubuntubeginnerguide1-large_002.png

Just tick the box and hit OK. There is even a simple search for you. Couldn’t be easier.

    http://news.softpedia.com/images/reviews/large/ubuntubeginnerguide1-large_007.png

Synaptic is more advanced, but the same principle applies. Over 20,000 packages to choose from.

With these two methods, one doesn’t ever have to download “an installer of a program”. Just select them from the (searchable) list.

If you really do insist on manually searching the internet for a package, then downloading it, then installing it, after the very long-winded way of Windows, then this method:

    http://news.softpedia.com/images/reviews/large/ubuntubeginnerguide1-large_011.png

… which pops up after your download, will quickly tell you if the package is installable, if it is correct for your system, and what other packages are required. It will automatically get the other packages for you.

I think a lot of stuck-on-Windows people are a long, long way behind the times when it comes to the ease of use of recent Linux installations. Sometimes I feel a little sorry for them.

Windows win due to lack of issues (even there’s lots of them) simply 999.99999 we all grow out of Windows!.. Linux aren’t user friendly. Bill Gates was right all the while.. Mirshalak - I totally agree, well said.

This kind of Linux fanboyism does nothing but hurt the Linux cause. You make us all look like ignorant, self righteous geeks.

If people want to use Windows then why sit there slagging it off? JUST DON’T USE IT AND GET ON WITH YOUR OWN LIFE! Really dude, what’s the point?

Sure, Windows has it’s faults, but then so does Linux, if everyone were uber proficient with a computer then I dare say Linux would hold the market share, but they aren’t and they’re been brought up on Windows OS’s, deal with it man.

Stop making us look bad by throwing your toys out of your pram.

    1) Vista came with my computer 2 years ago and has worked perfectly ever since, resource intensive it may be, but I like the aero interface, and this computer still feels quick. My experience of Linux in contrast is that installation is a rather hit and miss affair, more miss than hit, and when I did manage to get Ubuntu installed it broke twice when I tried to update it, requiring a reinstall on both occasions, I didn’t bother the second time.

    2) I did try Linux many times, if I was scared I wouldn’t have tried to use it.

    3) Games are not the only use I make of my computer, but yes I do like to play games from time to time.

    4) My AVG Anti-Virus Free is set up to automatically scan the hard drive for a couple of hours once a week, I can continue to use the computer whilst it’s doing this.

    5) My AVG Anti-Virus Free is free, (the clue is in the name). :-)

    6) This is a red herring, just because most people use windows that doesn’t make it bad either.

    7) I’ve had two, maybe three BSODs over the last 2 years, none over the last year, when I rebooted the computer it worked fine on each occasion.

    8) This is a straw man, I’m writing rebuttal on Open Office, and viewing this web page in Firefox.

    9) This point seems perfectly legitimate. :-)

    10) Articles like this make Linux seem like some sort of sinister cult, like $cientology, or Amway, where they get you into a little room and indoctrinate you about how great their products are. Where you dare not disagree, for fear of being made to feel like some sort of heretic, but where in the cold light of day the disadvantages outweigh any benefits that may or may not exist over and above whatever you were doing before.

Another windows desktop lover here, not really, but I have no other choice. Yes I love Linux, but as a server, and not as a desktop replacement, it does not fit our needs yet.

I have had no problems ever till date with windows and even if I had I was able to solve all of them. There is no point in blaming Windows until there is perfect alternate in Linux.

I have used Linux, and still using, but I never felt I could use it as my windows alternate.

Probably Linux would have been a winner if developers had spent their time in making existing stuff better than creating a thousand distros. Each geek in Linux world has his own distro preference, like I am stuck to Redhat based ones ;)

Just image the world if you have had 1000 versions of Windows!!!

Well hope Linux community really unites together to develop a strong OS rather than mixing up various existing software and coming up with a new distro!

A friend of mine said he is not aware of centos, and asked me to switch to ubuntu if he needs his help in anything on Linux! Guys this is Cool! Checkout distrowatch.com, I cannot remember the count for the day, but soon each of us can have a distro!!!

Is it not the right time to stop distros and unite together to make things stronger?

As others stated, this kind of articles doesn’t really help promoting GNU/Linux. Focus on your strengths and not on the weaknesses of the competition. That being said, it was a fun read, full of awful truths.
Those who back Windows XP: it is stable because it’s an eight year old OS. It’s ancient compared to any GNU/Linux distribution! After eight years of development, one can still get system hangs every now and then. One must assume it’s its personality.

“scan hard drive for a couple of hours once a week”

funny with about 2 terabytes on the hard drive it takes XP box to scan it a day and a half with bit defender but the same machine with Linux take only about an hour (yes i scan my drive even though i use Linux mostly due to the fact that i have XP installed for one or two work related apps)

Drive support is spotty on XP (sound card starts and stops working, no printer driver available( XP 64 bit) wireless is spotty and connection quality usually crap)

On Linux the biggest pain was the sound card as the drivers are still fairly new printer worked out of the box and wireless works perfectly ( granted the card that i have is a rt2860 with an open source driver freely available)

Again, i have to agree with MOST of the posts here, most of your points are just wrong, and the rest are stupid.

All you are doing in reinforcing the idea that linux is controlled by zealots, basically a cult, you have so many distro’s and FOSS/Linux are the true FUDters.

Ive been using Windows for a very long time since w3.0 and before, I have used computers from the DOS and before days, in fact i built my first computer in 1978 !!!

I cant remember the last time ive had a BSOD, and i got win XP the day it was released, never had a problem.

Ive also used linux, starting with RH 7.3 and it gave me more problems daily that XP have given me in 8 years of constant use.

Im now using Vista and W7 and they are both excellent OS’s, i cant fault either.

Linux could be great, you’ve had 17 years to perfect the code and OS, you’ve had 17 years to rewrite the OS making it completely original and not a knockoff of UNIX.

Talk about old, UNIX is ancient and linux is UNIX (wannabee).

You’ve had 17 years to craft your kernel and applications to make them professional and shine, but instead you try to drag other OS’s down to your level as opposed to raising Linux to a commercial level.

IF linux was any good, what y ou dont understand is that people woulld be willing to pay for it. (they pay for windows, happily).

When W7 comes out in RC i will buy it straight away, its rock solid stable and goes like a rocket.

I dont see any of your points being a valid reason for switching, and what would i switch too ?? one of the hundreds of “distro’s” so i can feed someones ego?

Ubuntu, 46,000 bugs, and you want me to use that??

HOw many people does open source employ, what does it contribute to the world economy ?? very very little.

Sorry, Linux is an epic fail.

Its a shame as it promised so very much, but failed to deliver.

Nice try, better luck next time.

Pffft, what about “11) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because…” I’m a graphic designer and Linux doesn’t run AdobeCS4, still requires too much coding to really get working at a basic level, isn’t user friendly like Mac, and would COST TOO MUCH MONEY IN LOST PRODUCTIVITY TO MAINTAIN!!!

So much for Linux being “free”. “Opportunity cost” can really COST, get it?

Using Windows or Linux is like to be a gay. Why someone cares why am I using my OS?
Also, Windows users are friendly guys - they will not pushing others to use this OS. But most of Linux users are aggressive - they uses Linux and pushing all others to use this. So much pressure on it. It is reason I dont like Linux.
I installed Ubuntu on Intel Atom (1 Gb RAM, 4 Gb CompactFlash drive instead of HDD). Linux was running very slow, each programm was opening few seconds, till minute. When I installed OS update, in the end of this I got frozen computer - had to make manual PC restart… Also there are not available drivers for HD WebCamera, M-audio FireWire sound card e.t.c.
Then I installed XP on the same environment - everything works fast, no crash, no problems. The most important - no problems with drivers.
So - Why do I have to use Linux?

I use both windows and linux. I must admit that Linux performs better on my 2 year old notebook. Vista uses twice as CPU power and RAM with 40 processes running and the processor soon maxes out when I run a couple of programs side by side.

In Mandriva my programs run better and file transfer is quicker and I like the package management system. I like KDE and compiz fusion and they don’t eat my CPU and RAM like aero does. I think everyone should definitely try Linux as it is improving all the time and driver support is better now than a few years ago.

It is difficult finding the right distribution to suit your needs with so many choices so I can understand what you are saying Prakash.

I like Windows too but I prefer XP to Vista. Vista is too resource hoggy for my likening. Cant comment on windows 7 as yet although it looks nice from the video I saw. I love my FM2009 so I could not totally switch to Linux.

Linux might not suit everybody’s needs but I wouldn’t put it down. Who knows years from now it might take over the desktop!

I use 4 operating systems on my lappy 2 of them which are Linux and 2 which are Windows. I run Elive which uses the enlightenment WM and i must say it blows Mac’s wm outta the water the second distro I run is Linux Mint it is the easiest distro to use and configure and it will support hardware out of the box. I prefer Linux over windows Just because Its Virus free and because it uses less system resources. My third os is Windows 7 it is faster than XP and Vista plus even tho its beta it crashes less then the other windows but everyone has there experiences so. I must say windows 7 is trying to look like KDE wm. the start menu bar copies everything that KDE does plus its thick like just like KDE. My last os is Vista it came on my lappy but I dont use it because it sucks and thats cause my preference. I do use Windows 7 just because I wanted to see how stable it is and plus to see if its a resource hog like vista. overall I just like Linux better. I would also recomend it to other people but its there choice if they want to use it. Also did you know that windows Kernel is actually Unix based it was borrowed stolen or whatever. and bill gates never actually wrote or developed ms dos he stole it from his roomate in college, and the truth about whether Linux or mac had the Dock first well this other operating system I think it was written in c++ not sure but anyways it had the dock first and the company was going under so apple bought it from the company and so they had it and started using it shortly after linux had one. Really the choice is up to the any who uses a computer whether or not they want to use Windows, ReactOS, Linux, Unix, BSD, Mac which is BSD based and BeOS, and SkyOS or any other OS. Its usually based on personal preference and past present and future experiences.

Same tired crap from both sides of the table.
The first OS I ever installed and used was Slackware. Since then, I’ve used Windows(9x through 7), many other Linux distros and MacOS 9 and X.
Here’s a fact. ALL OS’s SUCK. In their own ways. So does all other software, for that matter.
Slackware, being the OS that stole my cherry, will always have a soft spot in my groin. But it still sucks.
Here’s the key. Use the OS/application/utility combination that best accomplishes your intended goals with the least amount of hair loss. Sometimes, that’ll mean using Win. Sometimes it’ll mean some flavor of Linux. And, again, sometimes your needs may call for Mac.
My preference, all things being equal, is Linux. But all things aren’t always equal.

This was #$#*()* funny. I can only ask, when doing something like this, differentiate from the desktop and server crowd.

Linux is a kernel, a very good kernel. It runs on servers and desktops. Desktop use is, well .. not quite there yet. Ubuntu is getting there. The kernel is an entirely separate effort, it provides a POSIX interface and that’s it.

People don’t have time to set up Linux, thus it will never be used in a professional business. Also, people just want to click twice on a program for it to install and run it. When it breaks down in Linux, have fun googeling for 2 hours. It usually works right out of the box for Windows because Windows is the most supported OS out there.

All BSODs and virusses are user errors by the way, if you’re stupid enough to click on them and don’t have a virus scanner you don’t deserve to be on a PC.

When Linux makes it big one day (which several years away; keep telling yourselves it’s user-friendly / comparable to windows), exploits and malware will finally come into play (admittedly, repositories and selinux/etc make things a lot different), your natural dimness will get you burnt, and you’ll be ranting like a drama queen about the OS all over again.

    @ Mezuas

That was a joke, I thought it would be funny if I pretended to be a stupid user. I really tricked you! Pretty convincing eh?

    Linux forever!

    @em4r1z:
“Those who back Windows XP: it is stable because it’s an eight year old OS. It’s ancient compared to any GNU/Linux distribution!”

I never had a BSOD in Vista SP1 or Windows 7, either.

    @December:
“Anyone who won’t change to linux because they are too comfortable with Windows deserves the beating they get from viruses.”

Totally. How dare people to insist on using a perfectly working and stable OS that already does everything they need rather than switching to a geek toy that requires you to spend DAYS customizing it and googling for instructions just to get it working decently, in addition to not supporting nearly as much software as Windows.

    Idiot.

I have to disagree Linux is good for newbies as some distros are more user friendly.

Following the crowd definitely has its advantages. Sure you have to fend off malware but if you use computers at work, you need to use microsoft and adobe software. I know it’s doable in Linux but why bother?

Ordinarily, some teachers want to check out the good term paper writing technique of their students, however not all good students are able to write correctly just because of lack of writing skills and other issues. Thus, a sociology essay service will help to write the term paper format professionally.

Hmm, this site is devoted to Linux stuff, yet I see lots of winblow$ fans posting ignorant comments about stuff they have absolutely no knowledge of.

Remember: any Linux user has FAR MORE windows experience than the corresponding Redmond fan who dipped his/her toe once or twice in Linux (yes, we grew with windows but moved on to better prairies).

You can make a cult for Linux, you can say that Linux is the best what could happen to the world and only dumb Windows can’t see the perfection of Linux.
Linux is good for servers, but not for home users. I ended up reinstalling Mandriva 2010 after canceling it’s updates. How in the world I could know that doing this would damage the OS? After installation everything seems OK, but I couldn’t find a correct package of skype on skype site. After some searching I found Skype v2.0 (Windows users have version 4 already) which still refuses to accept sound recording from my mic, whatever I tried to do. Even getting to youtube was frustrating because I had to manually install flash player typing commands in Terminal. Yet, after installation I experience lag in video playback. I can’t use MS OFFICE on it and Open Office can’t work with macros like MS Office does. I still remember my days in one of the shops as computer technicians, and eee netbooks which get bricked after automatic updates.
I totally agree with reason no. 9) You shouldn’t switch to Linux because… you have to be a geek to use Linux and we all know that geeks don’t have girlfriend.

It takes some time to scan PC for viruses or malware (defragmentation on Windows 7 is done in the background), but you don’t need to sit at the PC and watch- you can go out with your GF or BF while Linux guy would find some interesting tasks spending few hours to fix this and that after system update. Update, which will be removed later on because community said it contained some bugs. Do a ordinary person who has a job (goes to school), wife and kids (GF or BF), outdoor activities (cycling, skateboarding, basketball) needs to sit at the PC and solve Linux riddles? I don’t think so! If you have PC or MAC, you can easily go to a workshop and leave it to the technicians, pay money and after a day get your machine back. Try to do the same. You would be lucky enough to find a technician who is familiar with “this special” Linux distribution which never gives problems and in the end you would pay more money than you pay for PC or Mac.
It looks that the only part which doesn’t get payed is Linux users and creators, while linux under GNU license is being sold with cheap routers, netbooks and so on, and so on. Everyone gets profit except Linux fanboys, who spent enormous times writing drivers, packages and guides for regular people, who only wants to watch youtube, use skype and edit DOC or XLS files they got from work.

    End of story.

Umm, I use skype, update without issues, watch youtube and have a wife. Oh yes, I have a life too. Yeah, I roll my own kernels and write a lot of my own software but that’s because I _want_to_ , not because I _need_ to.

And what makes you think the people who put embedded Linux OS on ‘cheap routers’ aren’t Linux geeks who actually have jobs working on Linux?

Wow, absolutely hysterical article, pathetic fan-boy reverse psychology will get the DUMB windows users to switch I’m sure. But the simple fact is Linux does not work out of the box for the majority of new users. Sure the system will work barely, but try to install your ATI, NVidia and Realtek drivers etc. to enable extra functionality and tell me it works then. Just a cursory look at the thousands of problems with Lucid Lynx 10.04, many of them from people giving Linux a try for the first time, will show you that this OS is not ready for mainstream usage. I have wanted Linux to work so badly and spent days looking for solutions to hardware issues, following official pages, community forums and unofficial workarounds with limited to no success whatsoever and I’m a technically competent user. Yes, Linux has a lot of nice architectural advantages over the cobbled together mess that is windows, however that cobble together mess works for the majority of users and your oh so sacred Linux doesn’t.
