Howto Increase Desktop Functionality With Compiz Fusion
Last week I showed you how to turn on some neat desktop animations using Compiz Fusion (formally beryl) – you can watch last week’s tutorial here. Today I will show you some of the useful productivity enhancements that Compiz has to offer, such as multiple desktops (workspaces), moving windows between desktops, expo (preview and choose from all your desktops), resizeable window previews, and scale (display and choose from all your open windows at once). I even throw in some wobbly windows for good measure!

Nixie,
Can you do a tutorial on how to make video tutorials using GNU/Linux? This will enable us to make tutorials on what we know so we can teach others. This will allow more people to learn about GNU/Linux and it will spread.
I had compiz on ubuntu… It turns out that it is a real laptop battery killer. I do not recommend it!

umm sorry to burst your bubble nixie, but most of those features are no unique to Compviz, as much as they part of the WM….
hey,
this isnt the reason people arent switching to ubuntu. its more to do with the fact that you cant run any applications on it (well none that you are used to). i suggest you do a tutorial on getting stuff to run through wine… stuff like 3dMax or AutoCAD that sort of stuff. Or do one about how to make the fonts looks better, cuz right now they are horrible.
thats just my thoughts, thanks tho.
ps. you are cute
Notice how she zooms in and out? I’m not aware of any apps that do in Ubuntu. If there is I’d like to know what it is and how hard it is to setup.
I could be wrong, but I think this is a camcorder job folks.

@Johnny Cage:
Its an option in the CCSM config if you install it. Hold control and scroll the mouse wheel once its activated.
I’m voting that we replace tux with this girl as the linux mascot.
She is VERY pretty.
This is not a camcorder job. Notice how the zoom is exactly square to the screen. You can do this kind of stuff easily in Linux because the source code is right there! instead of trying to hack into some binary video drivers and obtuse Windows libraries that are only designed to allow certain functions! Of coarse, you don’t have to mess with the code yourself, other people have already done that and have shown how to do it for you if you just Google it enough.
I still use windows on most of my many many computers, but my ThinkPad is running Ubuntu and it is by far my favorite machine to get work done on. I definitely prefer Open Office to Office 2007 for 90% of serious tasks. Gimp on the other hand can still use a lot of polish before it is as intuitive as Photoshop. Hopefully more 3rd parties will start bringing their applications to Gnome or KDE. The great thing is it doesn’t matter which because you just just run both. This isn’t a monopoly.
Functionality is a good thing dude!

Hello ,
Welcome to digg =)

Would be great if you made a tutorial going through video editing on linux.
So far iv been using mpeg with no gui .. some times gui’s are very helpful.
FYI: Nobody gives a shit about wobbly windows
But you are kind of cute.
girl you make compiz sound hot :)
You are absolutely enamoring but I like to keep things clean cut and very cut and dry (wobbly windows and such) I love what your doing though.
I want an alarm clock that wakes me up with the sound of her voice.
hello nixie
i’d like to second someone’s comment about making a tutorial on how to make tutorials. Personally, i tried Istanbul and found it to be of horrible quality (maybe i set it up wrong). I just finished with Wink and found it to be good, but i couldn’t produce a video file with it. Now I am about to try recordMyDesktop, but I would still like to know which one you use because it looks and sounds excellent.
Your videos are great and even though i have been using Linux for over a year i find some that teach new things!!
keep up the good job!
One of the nice things about compiz is that it can run on crappy graphics cards, even on my eeepc
you are beautiful btw
I wonder when an attractive woman will be able to contribute to the tech world without having her attractiveness pointed out. Guys calm down, yes she’s beautiful, but she’s not making these tutorials to show off her good looks. Have something more constructive to offer than comments on her looks.
On that note, great tutorial, yeah wobbly windows are just entertaining fluff, but the other features can be genuinely helpful. See Compiz looks good, but that’s all really secondary to its usefulness in many instances. See the similarities here?
That new haircut is amazing.
Sorry had to say it, it’s rare to see a linux girl cute like you :3
I noticed you’re having the same issue I was having with the screen not being refreshed properly. This addition to the workaround plugin worked wonders for me. Other users might find it useful too.

@Joe:
I realize I shouldn’t feed the troll, but in her defense, she did explain how to install CCSM which should’ve been there by default IMHO. Also, CCSM is MASSIVE. She did an excellent job of cutting straight to the point and showing where to find a few really useful settings.
@all:
Is it impossible for you people to comment on her tutorials without blabbing on about how hot she is? I mean, seriously? It’s getting kind of insane.
@Nathan:
But what else are they going to talk about? None of them actually use Ubuntu or anything other then windows 95. So of course they’re going to start talking about boobies and then wonder why they can’t get a date.
I have never noticed any real difference in battery life; with compiz enabled I get 2.15, without Compiz enabled I get 2.15, but I guess it depends how crazy you go watching the effects, I only see then when changing windows as I need to, not just for show (most of the time!).
Compiz is great, my graphics card is awful, but all of the effects work great. I doubt I could get Vista Aero to run on this.
When using Windows I really miss the ability to quickly move to other workspaces. I’ve never used zoom before but I can see that being useful too. Also using a laptop the keyboard shortcuts make life much easier to select windows, workspaces and such and save a lot of time messing around with the trackpad.
Wobbly windows are cool! What’s the matter with you people?
Very nice :)
Hi guys, thanks for all the feedback! This series of videos is intended to help people new to Linux/Ubuntu learn some new tricks, and see some of the fun things that are available to them. They aren’t intended to convince anyone to switch over, though if people decide to, great!
The desktop recording is done through ffmpeg (I used to use gtk-recordmydesktop but ffmpeg with x11grab is better and more flexible), and to zoom in on different areas I simply use Compiz Zoom (defaulted to on when you install Compiz) as I explained in my last video.
Nate – thank you SO much! I was not actually having a problem with my desktop, only on the recording. The refresh was fine on my display but when it recorded there were graphical artifacts (like the exploding window staying on screen). This was going to kill my attempt to make a new sphere/cube/compiz effects video, as I was getting screen tearing any time I tried to record it rotating with 3D windows (especially when playing a youtube video in one of those windows as it rotated). But now I can at least get by with minor flickering on the video that I can edit out, where before it looked amazing on my screen and then it looked so bad I could cry on playback.. so, thank you! *hugs*
A good idea to start using HTML5 video tags? I think it’s a good time, with Firefox 3.5 round the corner…
Nice vid, good to show the linux noobies how to get around our exciting OS! Here’s a tip for everyone, if your computer can support a 64 bit OS, then switch, it works out better in the long run.
It’s painful to work with wobbly windows
