How to surf anonymously with JanusVM

What is JanusVM?
JanusVM is software that allows you to surf the Internet without oppression or censorship, while protecting your privacy, security, and identity. It has advanced filtering capabilities for modifying web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk. JanusVM was designed to used on Microsoft Windows (2000/XP/2003) and Linux. (Source)

You need to download and install VirtualBox which you can download free from their website : http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

You can also use VMware player which is also free and run the the preconfigured VirtualMachine download of JanusVM. You can use the Live ISO version of JanusVM with VMware too but you need the commersial server version of VMware for that.

For this Experiment we will use the VirtualBox and Live ISO version of JanusVM under Windows 2003 environment.

First we install VirtualBox:

1

The installation is very straight forward no special settings or permissions are required.

After installing download JAnusVM live and extract and into a folder. The content should look like this:

2

Run virtualbox and start new virtual machine installation wizard by clicking on “New”.

3

Select “next” . Under Name option put any name. I will call JanusVM Live. Under “OS type” select “Linux 2.6″.

Select “next”. It will ask you much virtual memory you want to assign this virtual machine. The default recommended value is 128 for my computer, to be on the safe side and not make it too slow, I will give it 240MB. Depending on how much memory you have in your computer anything over 200MB should be safe to install JanusVM.

Select “next”. Now it will ask you to select a “boot hard disk”. You can ignore this because we won’t need it for this settup.

Select “next”. It will give you summary of the options you have chosen. You can select “Finish” to end the wizard.

It should look like this:

4

Now click on “CD/DVD-ROM”. We will mount the JanusVM ISO image that we downloaded the mount it so that the virtual machine can run it on startup.

5

You have to browse to the ISO image you saved in your harddrive and select it. Should look like this:

6

Press “select” and “OK” to finish the configuration. Press “Start” to Start Virtual machine.

7

You should give it several minutes and as it initializes itself and downloads some informations for TOR.

The main screen should look like this:

8

One thing you should note (and Virtualbox should give you a warning), if you accidently activate the keyboard inside the virtual machine it will not get out of the virtual machine box, to release your mouse click the “ctrl” in your keyboard on right-hand side. For VMware it’s “ctrl+alt” on your left hand side.

Follow the instruction, and go to start–>Run and type this:

“\\\Setup\Run.bat”

For me the path was “\\Janusvm\Setup\Run.bat”

It should install JAnusVM VPN and put a shortcut on your desktop. Run the shortcut. The dafault is “guest” username with now password. Just press “connect”

9

Thats it!! You should see an icon on your bottom right-hand side.

Now browse on Mr. Anonymous.!!

For more documentation video tutorial visit the official site of JanusVM. Others will tell you it is easier to install JanusVM with VMware player. But I prefer Virtualbox.

Pavs.
