Installing Four Other Desktop Edition on Ubuntu
Most of us know Ubuntu by it’s default gnome desktop look, but very few have ever tried other forms of desktop environment that are available besides gnome for ubuntu. There are four other main desktop environments for Ubuntu:
kubuntu, based on K Desktop Environment.
Edubuntu, is based on both gnome and K desktop environment, but it’s designed for young users. Edubuntu also provides three different theme setups, ‘young’, for younger users, ‘plain’ for a clean desktop setup, and ‘default’, which is a general purpose theme setup.
Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop environment, arguably the lightest, fastest linux desktop environment out there.
Gobuntu, strictly follows Free Software Foundation’s four freedoms. Which means there will be no firmware, drivers, applications, or content included in Gobuntu that does not include the full source or whose license does not provide the right to use, study, modify, and redistribute the body of work.
One way to install all these desktop environments would be to use synaptic package manger under ubuntu and search for the string “desktop”, and choose one package at a time, they will automatically choose their dependencies and necessary file to install. like this:

be warned that the total size of this installation will be quite big and depending on your internet connection might take quite long.

However, there is an easier way to install all this package in one single line of command onthe terminal. Just type this and enter your password when prompted for it: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop xubuntu-desktop gobuntu-desktop edubuntu-desktop

After completing the installation, when you reboot you will have the option to choose you desktop environment to log into:

Small typo:
“sudo apt-get install kibuntu-desktop”
should be
“sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop”
Great tip by the way, I’ve been thinking to add kubuntu or just the KDE4 into my ubuntustudio installation.
Cheers.
no fluxbuntu?? http://fluxbuntu.org
@shodanjodm thanks for pointing out the typo.
@ed fluxubuntu is not one of the main ubuntu distros maintained by canonical, I believe. That’s why I didn’t mention it. Besides there are so many other distros based on ubuntu. Can’t mention them all. Personally I didn’t try fluxbuntu yet, so I will add that to my to-do list. thanks.
cheers,
pavs
Pavs, I believe the only real differences between flavors are the default desktops/wm’s and apps — so installing one distro and apt-get the wm’s you want to try is an easy way to try something new. I just love fluxbox desktop since its so lightweight, customizable, and extensible (and I have enough hardware to run more bloated stuff). I have some screenshots at the MLUG forums http://www.maysville-linux-users-group.org/ftopict-231.html
Unfortunately, Starting from a healthy Ubuntu, now I have Kubuntu as default boot, which does not complete, Kubuntu gives control to Edubuntu where I can choose Gnome as my default - it pays not attention to this.
All the icons of Gnome have changed - some for the better, most worse. The menus are a mess of KDE, GNOME and other stuff.
This is absolutely the worst thing you could ever do. My whole system is boned up now thanks to this article. Like intrader, I once had a healthy Ubuntu only system. Now I have a confused jumble of horseshat. Edubuntu is strictly for kids, why would I want that crap. My icons are all messed up, one day I boot into Kubuntu, the next day it is crapbuntu.
I have installed kubuntu, gobuntu, edubuntu and xubuntu on my Ubuntu desktop waw it is marvelous the magic of Ubuntu is great……..
