9 Web browsers for Linux

Firefox is a great web browser, there is absolutely no argument about that. However those of us who are using linux long enough have went by quite well without it, and some still do. In the spirit of linux and open source (not so much for opera), it is only fair that we are aware of alternate options for linux browsers out there. Here is an attempt to list some of the linux browsers actively developed and updated. This list is not comprehensive, most of these browsers are not exclusive to linux OS; and because most modern browsers use gecko engine and evolved from mozilla/netscape some of them have familiar layouts. If I missed out any popular browser do let me know in your comments.

Also two text-based web browsers that gets special mentions.

New to the scene (thus not very well known) is Arora http://arora-browser.com/ a QtWebKit browser that is under very active development and is good enough for near all my daily browsing.

    Hey Pavs,

Don’t forget Flock! We’ve been putting out Linux builds of our social web browser since 2006.

Flock is built on the Firefox core, but we layer a bunch of powerful social tools on top, integrating your favorite social networks and social media.

Thanks for getting the word out about alternative browsers!

    @ Evan,
Hi Evan, the reason I didn’t mention Flock because it is a direct fork of Firefox. Flock and Firefox are great browsers, but I wanted to mention alternatives of these browsers. I use flock quite often in one of my system.

@Benjamin Meyer: Thanks I wasn’t aware of arora. I will try it out.

Choice is bad. Firefox and Opera are the most feature-rich and stable browsers available for Linux, and there’s a reason for it:

They’re managed by corporations and not primarily by egotistical developers bickering on a mailing list.

Good list, but not terribly useful without detailing something about those browsers, like their origin, strengths, and why they are popular, rather than just screenshots.

It is about time a peace like this was written. This got dugg and and prior peaces linked to from digg were biased towards Mac in a deceitful way as they failed to mention that they were targeting Mac users. I was offended because it attempted to push me to use Mac as if it was the only operating system. At least this doesn’t attempt to push it deceitfully. We know who is being targeted here and need not click if we don’t care whereas the other one presumed you were running Mac (even though it did have some cross-platform MS Windows/Linux browsers it had allot more Mac only browsers)!

Hello… Your Opera screenshot looks quite old. Opera Software have already released version 9.51. Since version 9.50 Opera have a new skin, so much different from the last one (the one from the screenshot). Its more eye-candy than the last one, and more ‘usable’ too ;D
